The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) are set to formally unveil a new agreement on Wednesday, January 14, aimed at improving the quality of university education and ensuring stability in the system.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Federal Ministry of Education. According to the ministry, the signing ceremony will take place at the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Conference Hall in Maitama, Abuja, and will be presided over by the Minister of Education, Maruf Alausa, alongside the Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Ahmad.
The development follows a recent 14-day ultimatum issued by ASUU, which was later withdrawn after overnight negotiations between the union and the Federal Government.
The ministry noted that the agreement underscores the government’s commitment to resolving industrial disputes through dialogue, mutual understanding, and cooperation. It added that the deal is the outcome of years of engagement between both parties to address recurring disagreements in the university system.
The agreement also aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which positions education as a key driver of national development, human capital advancement, and socio-economic growth.
The ministry said the unveiling is expected to promote industrial harmony, create a more conducive academic environment, and boost confidence among students, university staff, and the general public. The event will be attended by senior government officials, ASUU leaders, heads of tertiary institutions, development partners, and members of the media.
