The United States government has revealed plans to impose terrorism sanctions on the Sudanese branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, with the designation expected to come into force later this month.
According to reports, the decision was announced on Monday through a statement from the United States Department of State and signed by U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio.
In the statement titled “Terrorist Designation of the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood,” Rubio explained that the group would be classified as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist and also listed as a Foreign Terrorist Organization.
He noted that the designation is scheduled to take effect on March 16, 2026.
“Today, the Department of State is designating the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist and intends to designate the group as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, effective March 16, 2026,” Rubio stated.
Rubio alleged that the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood had carried out violent attacks on civilians amid the ongoing crisis in Sudan.
According to him, the group has used extreme violence against civilians in an attempt to disrupt efforts aimed at resolving the conflict while promoting its Islamist agenda.
He further claimed that fighters associated with the group had taken part in mass executions of civilians, adding that some members reportedly received training and support from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
The secretary of state also recalled that a group connected to the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood had previously faced U.S. sanctions.
He explained that the organisation’s armed wing, the al-Baraa Bin Malik Brigade, was sanctioned in September 2025 under Executive Order 14098 for its involvement in Sudan’s ongoing war.
Rubio additionally accused Iran of backing extremist activities globally through the IRGC, which he described as a key tool used by Tehran to support militant groups.
He stressed that the United States would continue to intensify pressure on both Iran and Muslim Brotherhood-linked groups.
“The United States will use all available tools to deprive the Iranian regime and Muslim Brotherhood chapters of the resources to engage in or support terrorism,” Rubio said.
The State Department noted that the move was made under U.S. legal provisions that allow authorities to sanction terrorist organisations.
It added that the action was carried out in accordance with Section 219 of the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act and Executive Order 13224, laws that empower the government to designate terrorist groups and impose financial and operational restrictions on them.
