Veteran Nollywood actor, Clarus of New Masquerade, dies at 85

Veteran Nollywood actor Davis Ofor, widely recognised for his role as Clarus in the classic 1980s sitcom New Masquerade, has passed away at the age of 85.

The news of his death was announced on Tuesday by fellow actor Tony Akposheri via an Instagram post. Akposheri expressed deep shock and sorrow, reflecting on their recent time together.

He shared that they had celebrated the New Year side by side, reminiscing, laughing, and speaking optimistically about the future.

“Today, my heart is heavy. Davis Ofor, fondly known as Clarus from New Masquerade, is gone,” he wrote.
“We crossed into the New Year together—laughing, talking, sharing memories, and looking forward to what lay ahead. We spoke about life and plans, never imagining that time was already slipping away from you.”

Paying tribute, Akposheri described the late actor as more than just a familiar face on screen, highlighting his warmth, humour, and vibrant personality.

“You were more than a screen icon—you were a friend, a brother, a man whose presence could brighten any room,” he said.
“It’s difficult to accept that the voice I heard not long ago is now a memory, that someone so full of life is now a story we tell.”

He concluded with a heartfelt farewell:
“Rest well, my friend. You brought joy, made a lasting impact, and will never be forgotten.”

Davis Ofor rose to fame through his role as Clarus in New Masquerade, a hugely popular comedy series that aired on the Nigerian Television Authority in the 1980s. His performance made him a household name and secured his place as one of the most memorable figures in Nigeria’s television history.

The cause of his death has not yet been disclosed.
