Victor Osimhen has spoken candidly about Galatasaray’s possible opponents in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, revealing that a potential showdown with Liverpool F.C. would come with added intensity.
Following Galatasaray’s dramatic play-off victory over Juventus F.C. to secure a place in the knockout stage, focus has now turned to Friday’s draw and the high-profile teams awaiting the Turkish champions. Among the potential opponents are Premier League sides Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur F.C., both regarded as formidable contenders.
While Osimhen affirmed that Galatasaray are prepared to face any opponent, he admitted there are certain matchups he would prefer to avoid.
“Honestly, meeting Liverpool now would feel like some sort of revenge,” the Nigerian forward said during an interview with CBS Sports.
“Whoever we face, we’ll be ready. But if I’m being honest, I’d prefer to avoid Liverpool. If we draw them, we’ll fight for it, but it definitely won’t be easy.”
Galatasaray previously edged Liverpool 1-0 during the league phase in Istanbul, with Osimhen netting the decisive goal. However, the striker acknowledged that a return fixture at Anfield would pose a far tougher challenge.
Despite hinting at a desire to steer clear of the Merseyside club, the 27-year-old emphasized that no team left in the competition can be taken lightly.
“This is the Champions League — there are no easy games. You can see how well FK Bodø/Glimt have performed in this tournament. To win it, you have to face the top teams and prove yourself. We’ve played Liverpool, but not at Anfield. If it happens, it’ll be a fantastic game. We’re ready for the challenge. It won’t be easy, but we have the fighting spirit.”
The 2025/2026 UEFA Champions League Round of 16 draw is set to take place on Friday, February 27.
