Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal Defects From PDP to APC

The Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The announcement was made by the state’s Deputy Governor, Mani Mummuni, in a video obtained by PREMIUM TIMES.

In a follow-up statement, the governor’s media aide, Nuhu Salihu Anka, confirmed that the defection came after extensive consultations with political stakeholders, elders, and supporters across the state.

According to Anka, Lawal’s decision to quit the PDP was largely driven by persistent internal crises, leadership disputes, and unresolved structural problems within the party at both the national and state levels.

He said the situation had created uncertainty and distractions that could hinder effective governance and the delivery of democratic benefits to the people of Zamfara.

The statement noted that the governor prioritised peace, security, and development in the state, stressing that aligning with the APC would provide greater stability and improve cooperation with the Federal Government.

The final discussions leading to the decision reportedly took place at the Government House in Gusau, where the deputy governor met with senior government officials and key political stakeholders.

Lawal expressed appreciation to PDP members and supporters for their support over the years but said the current political realities and unresolved party crises made the move necessary in the interest of good governance and the future of Zamfara State.

By joining the APC, the governor reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening unity, enhancing security, accelerating development, and ensuring stronger collaboration between the state and the Federal Government.

The state government also called on citizens, political leaders, and supporters to remain calm and supportive as Zamfara enters what it described as a new political phase aimed at promoting unity, stability, and development.
