The Zamfara State Government has announced that the ongoing renovation and upgrade of the Sardauna Memorial Stadium in Gusau is about 90 per cent complete, with the facility expected to be ready for use by February.
Naija News reports that the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, Haruna Dikko, made the disclosure on Friday during an inspection of the project site alongside other ministry officials.
Addressing journalists after the visit, Dikko expressed satisfaction with both the quality and speed of work, assuring residents that the project would be delivered on schedule.
He noted that the stadium was in a poor and abandoned condition when Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration assumed office in 2023, prompting the decision to rehabilitate and modernise the facility.
“When we came in, the stadium was dilapidated and not in use. The government resolved to upgrade it so it can once again serve the people,” Dikko said.
According to him, the upgraded stadium will be reopened for Zamfara United Football Club and other sporting activities across the state. He added that the facility would also be used for non-sporting events as part of efforts to generate additional revenue for the state.
“This facility will not only support Zamfara United FC and sports development, but will also host other events to boost revenue for the state,” he explained.
Dikko commended the project contractor, Monimichelle Sports Company, for the standard of work delivered so far and assured them of continued government backing to ensure timely completion.
“We are pleased with the progress. The government will continue to provide the necessary support to ensure the project is completed by February,” he added.
Also speaking, the project engineer, Terngo Williams, assured the government and residents that the stadium would be completed within the agreed timeframe. He conducted officials around the renovated sections, including the 1,000-seat pavilion, team dressing rooms, sanitary facilities, referees’ room, medical room and a dedicated area for ball boys.
Williams also highlighted work ongoing at the main bowl of the stadium, where drainage pipes are being installed ahead of the laying of the synthetic turf. He confirmed that all materials needed to complete the project are already on site.
“We are working diligently to complete the project and ensure it meets the required specifications,” he said.
