Okpebholo Postpones School Resumption in Edo Central

The Edo State Government has postponed the reopening of all public and private schools in Edo Central Senatorial District.

In a statement, Commissioner for Education Dr. Paddy Iyamu explained that the resumption has been delayed until further notice to allow the state to address pressing issues and improve the welfare of pupils. He added, “The new resumption date will be communicated to the public in due course. Parents, guardians, and all education stakeholders are advised to take note and comply accordingly.”

The decision follows unrest in the area after a peaceful protest over insecurity on Saturday escalated into violence. Hoodlums attacked traders at the livestock market, killed goats, and beat cows—incidents captured in a viral video. They also vandalised the palace of the Onojie of Ekpoma, Zaiki Anthony Abumere II, which was condemned by Governor Okpebholo.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed that one person was shot by a soldier, and the case has been referred to military authorities.

The crisis began when residents of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, protested rising insecurity, including kidnappings and the killing of a youth on Friday night. The demonstration escalated when some youths hijacked it, blocked a major highway, and attacked Hausa traders at the livestock market, causing widespread panic.
