Éric Chelle has identified Portugal as one of the strongest contenders for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, expressing confidence that Roberto Martínez’s team has what it takes to lift the trophy.
Speaking ahead of Nigeria’s international friendly against the European giants on Wednesday night, the Super Eagles coach praised the quality and depth of the Portuguese squad as they fine-tune preparations for the tournament to be hosted across the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Portugal, considered among the favourites by many football analysts, have been drawn in Group K alongside DR Congo, Uzbekistan and Colombia.
Addressing journalists during a pre-match press conference, Chelle described the fixture as an important opportunity for his rebuilding Nigerian side.
“This team could become world champions in a month. It is a great opportunity for us to face Portugal on their home soil,” Chelle said.
Portugal attacker Francisco Trincão also acknowledged the challenge posed by Nigeria, noting that the Super Eagles would provide a demanding test despite the match being a friendly.
Nigeria head into the encounter in positive form after victories over Zimbabwe and Jamaica, as well as a draw against Poland in their last three friendly matches.
However, Trincão stressed that Portugal’s priority remains improving their tactical approach and building confidence ahead of the World Cup.
The former FC Barcelona winger noted similarities between Nigeria’s physical style of play and that of DR Congo, one of Portugal’s group-stage opponents.
“We want to make the most of this match. The two teams share some similarities, particularly in their physical approach. We must focus on our preparations, assess our options and learn from the experience,” he said.
He added that Portugal’s attention would remain on executing their game plan rather than concentrating solely on Nigeria.
“It will be a difficult game, but our objective is to perform well and head into the World Cup with confidence,” Trincão concluded.
