The Nigerian House of Representatives has been thrown into mourning following the death of Hon. Yaya Tongo, who represented the Kwami/Funakaye/Gombe Federal Constituency of Gombe State.
According to reports, Tongo, who was elected into the 10th National Assembly under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general elections, later defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in March 2026.
His death was confirmed on Friday by former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, in a post shared on his verified X account.
Pantami disclosed that he had visited the late lawmaker earlier in the day at Nizamiye Hospital in Abuja, where he was receiving treatment, noting that his condition appeared critical at the time.
He explained that during the visit, he prayed for Tongo alongside associates and also met members of his family, including his children and close relatives at the hospital.
According to him, he left the hospital deeply concerned about the lawmaker’s health condition and was later informed of his passing a few hours afterwards.
Pantami described the news as painful, adding that Tongo’s death occurred on a Friday, which he noted carries spiritual significance in Islam.
He prayed for Allah to forgive the deceased and grant him eternal rest in Jannatul Firdaus, while also asking for strength for his family to bear the loss.
As of the time of filing this report, the leadership of the House of Representatives had yet to release an official statement on the development.
Hon. Yaya Tongo was serving his first term in the 10th National Assembly at the time of his death, representing his constituency in Gombe State.
