The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State has officially presented Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo as its deputy governorship candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
Sowunmi-Kolapo, a former Group Business Editor at The PUNCH, was unveiled on Monday in Abeokuta as the running mate to the party’s governorship flagbearer, Oladipupo Adebutu.
The event, held at the party’s state secretariat, attracted key stakeholders, party leaders, youth and women groups, as well as supporters from across Ogun State. Among those in attendance was former senator Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, whose presence further sparked speculation about her political future following her recent resignation from the APC.
Speaking after her presentation, Sowunmi-Kolapo expressed gratitude to the party leadership for the opportunity, describing her nomination as a call to greater service. She pledged loyalty to the PDP and Adebutu, promising to leverage her experience and commitment to help drive development in the state.
She said the PDP ticket offers a renewed opportunity to deliver people-focused governance, with emphasis on economic growth, youth empowerment, quality education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
“Our mission is to restore hope to the people of Ogun State. We are committed to building a government that listens to the people, responds to their needs, and ensures that no community is left behind,” she stated.
She also urged party members to remain united and intensify grassroots mobilization ahead of the 2027 election.
Adebutu described his running mate as competent, experienced, and compassionate, noting that her selection followed extensive consultations with party stakeholders. According to him, the PDP ticket represents a credible alternative capable of addressing Ogun State’s socio-economic challenges.
He assured residents that a PDP-led administration would prioritize job creation, industrial growth, improved infrastructure, and policies aimed at enhancing citizens’ welfare.
PDP Confident of Victory in 2027
Reflecting on the party’s previous governorship contests, Adebutu maintained that the PDP had remained steadfast in its quest to govern Ogun State.
He said the party believed it had been denied victory in previous elections but expressed confidence that 2027 would mark a turning point.
“We have been on this journey for nearly a decade. This time, I believe the moment is right, and the PDP will form the next government of our dear state,” he said.
Adebutu also emphasized the strength of the party’s current lineup, stating that all 40 candidates presented by the PDP were united and committed to victory.
Adebutu Criticizes APC Administration
The PDP governorship candidate said his search for a running mate centered on competence, transparency, dedication, and compassion.
He described Sowunmi-Kolapo as an accomplished journalist and entrepreneur whose passion for the welfare of ordinary citizens made her the ideal choice.
According to him, Ogun residents would have the opportunity in 2027 to replace what he termed the APC’s “incompetent government” with a more responsive administration.
Meanwhile, Ogun PDP Chairman, Dr. Abayomi Tella, said the choice of Sowunmi-Kolapo demonstrated the party’s commitment to presenting its best candidates for leadership.
He urged members to intensify mobilization efforts across the state’s 20 local government areas, expressing confidence that unity and sustained engagement with voters would secure victory for the party.
