Governors of Nigeria’s 36 states have unanimously endorsed the establishment of State Police, describing the move as consistent with the principles of federalism and constitutional governance.
The position was announced in a communiqué issued after a meeting of the Nigeria Governors Forum in Abuja and signed by the Forum’s Chairman and AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
The governors said their decision followed consultations with state attorneys-general and a review of proposed constitutional amendments aimed at creating state-controlled police formations. The endorsement comes as legislation on State Police continues to advance through the National Assembly, having passed the House of Representatives and cleared second reading in the Senate.
Beyond security reforms, the governors reaffirmed their commitment to improving electricity supply and supporting ongoing power sector reforms. They also expressed support for the proposed National Solar Super-Grid initiative, which seeks to expand electricity access through decentralized solar energy generation linked to a national transmission network.
According to the governors, the project could boost industrial growth, strengthen energy security, expand state electricity markets, and accelerate economic development.
The Forum also pledged support for the National Nutrition 774 (N-774) Initiative, reiterating its commitment to tackling child malnutrition and improving nutrition outcomes nationwide. The governors further encouraged continued stakeholder engagement on the proposed National Nutrition Bill to strengthen Nigeria’s nutrition governance framework.
