The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced that its Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be temporarily closed on Friday, June 19, 2026, in observance of Juneteenth National Independence Day.
The Mission made the announcement in a post shared on its official X account on Thursday, informing the public that both diplomatic offices would suspend operations for the US federal holiday.
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Friday, June 19, 2026, in observance of Juneteenth National Independence Day,” the statement read.
The temporary closure means routine consular service
s, including visa appointments, passport processing and other non-emergency services, will not be available during the holiday. Regular diplomatic and consular operations are expected to resume after the one-day holiday.
Juneteenth is celebrated annually on June 19 to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. The date marks June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the freedom of enslaved African-Americans, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
The day was officially designated a US federal holiday in 2021 after legislation signed by former President Joe Biden. Since then, federal agencies, including US Embassies and Consulates around the world, have observed Juneteenth as a public holiday.
