The Senate is reportedly considering a formal investigation into comments made by Senator Adams Oshiomhole concerning the controversial suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
According to sources, the matter could be discussed when lawmakers reconvene for an emergency plenary session scheduled for Tuesday.
The development follows remarks by Oshiomhole suggesting that some senators’ signatures were improperly attached to the report that recommended Akpoti-Uduaghan’s six-month suspension. He later clarified that he did not accuse anyone of forging signatures.
However, the comments have reportedly generated concern among several senior senators, who are said to be advocating for the Senate to take an official position on the issue.
Sources indicated that the emergency session convened by Senate President Godswill Akpabio may provide an opportunity for lawmakers to address the controversy and decide on appropriate measures.
While Senate leadership has not confirmed whether the matter will feature on the agenda, Senate spokesman Senator Yemi Adaramodu stated that allegations capable of undermining the integrity of the chamber would not be ignored.
Adaramodu said the Senate would review Oshiomhole’s comments and determine its response, stressing that no senator had reported any case of forged signatures in relation to Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension or any other Senate proceeding.
He maintained that Senate decisions are made openly during plenary sessions after extensive debate and urged the public to disregard claims suggesting otherwise, describing such allegations as unfounded and inconsistent with the institution’s procedures.
