State Police, Security Issues To Take Centre Stage As Senate Convenes Emergency Session Today

The Senate has announced that discussions on national security and the proposed State Police Bill will be at the forefront of its emergency plenary session scheduled for today.

Lawmakers are expected to examine legislative measures aimed at addressing the country’s growing security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, made this known in Abuja on Monday.

Adaramodu, who represents Ekiti South Senatorial District, described the State Police Bill as one of the key issues before the upper chamber.

According to him, the Senate is awaiting the report of the committee handling the bill following its successful passage through second reading.

Speaking on the agenda of the emergency sitting, Adaramodu said matters relating to national security would receive significant attention, stressing that the State Police proposal remains a priority for lawmakers.

He reiterated the Senate’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s security framework through legislative action and collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

The Senate spokesperson noted that the National Assembly is prepared to work closely with the Executive arm and other partners to tackle insecurity and restore peace across the country.

He added that lawmakers are determined to support efforts aimed at curbing the activities of bandits, terrorists, kidnappers, and other criminal elements threatening public safety.

The emergency plenary session is scheduled to hold at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 23, 2026.

Senators were officially informed of the sitting through a memo dated June 15 and signed by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo.

The notice indicated that the session was convened at the request of Senate President Godswill Akpabio to deliberate on issues considered vital to national security and stability.

The State Police Bill remains one of the most significant constitutional amendment proposals before the National Assembly.

Proponents argue that devolving policing powers to the states would enhance intelligence gathering, improve community policing, and enable quicker responses to local security threats.

However, opponents have expressed concerns that state-controlled police forces could be exploited for political purposes.

Nigeria currently operates a centralized policing structure under the control of the Federal Government through the Nigeria Police Force.
