Ali Modu Sheriff Accuses Peter Obi of Backing Nigeria’s Division

Former Borno State Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, has alleged that the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) 2027 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, harbours views that support the division of Nigeria.

Sheriff made the remarks on Monday during an appearance on Politics Today, a current affairs programme on Channels Television, while reacting to Obi’s recent call for President Bola Tinubu to resign over the country’s worsening security and economic challenges.

According to Sheriff, Obi’s perceived support for the Biafra cause raises concerns about his commitment to Nigeria’s unity. He further claimed that the former Anambra State governor has never publicly condemned the activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

“Peter Obi, up to this moment, is pursuing the division of Nigeria because he believes in Biafra,” Sheriff said.

He added that Obi should publicly clarify his position on Nigeria’s unity if he does not support the country’s breakup.

“He never condemns Biafra or IPOB, as he wants to divide Nigeria. He should come out and say if he doesn’t believe in the division of the country.

“Anybody aspiring to lead Nigeria must be someone who stands for Nigeria, not for any section.”

Meanwhile, human rights activist Segun Awosanya, popularly known as Segalink, recently questioned Obi’s suitability for Nigeria’s presidency.

Awosanya argued that Obi’s popularity is driven more by public frustration than by demonstrated national leadership, claiming that his politics is divisive and largely fuelled by what he described as an online “mob.” He made the remarks during an interview on Vanguard Politics Hub, where he discussed the country’s political landscape, the 2027 general election, and Obi’s presidential ambition.
