Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus has dismissed claims that Cristiano Ronaldo is a burden to the national team, insisting the veteran forward remains a symbol of Portuguese football.
Jesus, who was appointed Portugal’s manager on July 10 on a four-year contract following the country’s 2026 campaign, praised the 41-year-old striker and said he would never consider Ronaldo a problem for the Seleção.
The former Al-Nassr coach, who guided Ronaldo to his first Saudi Pro League title last season, said he values players based on their performances rather than their age.
“Cristiano will never be a problem for the national team or for me,” Jesus said. “When the time comes to make decisions, I will speak privately with Cristiano and every other player. He is a symbol of Portugal, and his name will remain in football history forever.”
Ronaldo came under intense criticism during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with many questioning whether he was too old to lead Portugal’s attack. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner scored three goals during the tournament as Portugal exited in the Round of 16 following a 1-0 defeat to Spain.
Despite the criticism, Jesus reiterated his confidence in Ronaldo, stressing that he would continue to select the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star as long as he remains in top form.
