Veteran Nigerian actress Bukky Wright has opened up about her decision to step away from Nollywood for almost two decades before recently making her return to the screen.
Speaking in an interview with Morayo Afolabi, Wright explained that she deliberately put her acting career on hold to focus on raising her children, a decision she said she has never regretted.
The actress made her comeback with The Return of Omotara Johnson, a sequel to the movie that helped establish her as a prominent figure in Nollywood.
According to Wright, the decision to bring back the popular character was largely influenced by fans who had repeatedly asked to see her reprise the role.
“The fans asked for it,” she said.
She added that the response to the new movie has been positive, with audiences showing excitement over her return to the screen.
Wright also disclosed that she intentionally kept her comeback private until she was ready to announce it publicly. She said even some people in the entertainment industry were unaware that she had returned to Nigeria and was working on the project.
“I’ve learned that what you keep close to your heart manifests much better,” she said.
Reflecting on her long absence from Nollywood, Wright said motherhood was the major reason she stepped away from the industry.
She explained that relocating abroad allowed her to be more present in the lives of her young sons and provide them with the care and guidance she felt they needed.
For Wright, being available for her children took priority over maintaining her career in the entertainment industry at the time.
“Motherhood called,” the actress said, explaining that she could not imagine raising her young children without being actively present in their daily lives.
She therefore chose to put her successful acting career on hold and dedicate herself to motherhood before eventually returning to Nollywood.
