Stanley Nwabali emerged as Nigeria’s hero as the Super Eagles defeated Egypt on penalties to claim the bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
After 120 goalless minutes filled with near misses and VAR controversies, it was Nwabali’s composure in the shootout that made the difference. The goalkeeper produced two crucial saves, securing a hard-fought victory and a podium finish for Nigeria.
The third-place clash was highly competitive, with both teams playing intensely in front of 38,113 fans, creating an electric atmosphere. Nigeria seemed to take the lead in the first half when Akor Adams headed home a close-range effort, but VAR ruled it out for a foul, leaving the Super Eagles frustrated.
The second half mirrored the first, with Nigeria controlling possession at times and Egypt threatening on the counter through Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush. Ademola Lookman also had a goal disallowed for offside, adding to Nigeria’s frustrations.
Injuries and substitutions disrupted the flow—Semi Ajayi had to leave the field, while coach Eric Chelle introduced fresh legs in search of a breakthrough that never came. Despite multiple chances on both sides, neither team could score in regular or extra time, leading to a penalty shootout.
Nigeria held their nerve in the shootout, with Alex Iwobi, Moses Simon, Akor Adams, and Ademola Lookman all converting. Egypt’s Rami Rabia and Mahmoud Saber scored, but the pressure rattled their star players. Omar Marmoush’s shot was saved by Nwabali, and Mohamed Salah missed his attempt, while Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s miss briefly kept Egypt alive. Nwabali’s final save sealed the win.
The victory gave Nigeria a well-earned bronze medal, capping a challenging AFCON campaign and showcasing the team’s resilience and depth. For Egypt, it was a night of fine margins and missed opportunities.
Under the floodlights and in the tension of penalties, Stanley Nwabali stood tall, guiding the Super Eagles to a deserved place on the podium.
