President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly ordered the suspension of the All Progressives Congress (APC) electronic registration exercise in Kano State ahead of the anticipated defection of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to the ruling party.
The directive comes as Governor Yusuf is expected to meet President Tinubu today at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, to conclude arrangements for his formal exit from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the APC.
Sources told Daily Post that Yusuf’s extended stay in Abuja was linked to efforts to secure an audience with the President, who had been out of the country and only returned late Wednesday. The sources added that Tinubu asked the governor to wait and meet him immediately upon his return before making any further political moves.
Confirming the development, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Downstream Petroleum, Alhassan Doguwa, said the APC e-registration exercise in Kano was halted following instructions from President Tinubu and the party’s National Chairman.
According to Doguwa, the suspension was meant to ensure that Governor Yusuf is officially received into the APC before the registration process begins.
“Even the APC e-registration in Kano could not start because President Tinubu and the party’s National Chairman directed that Governor Yusuf should be the first to register,” Doguwa said.
He made the statement while addressing supporters in a video that has since gone viral on social media.
Although there has been no official confirmation from the Presidency or the APC national leadership, party insiders say the pause in the registration exercise highlights the importance attached to Yusuf’s expected defection and its impact on the party’s political structure in Kano State.
The meeting between President Tinubu and Governor Yusuf is expected to formally pave the way for the governor’s entry into the APC and shape subsequent party activities in the state.
