The interim state executive committee of the Action Peoples Party (APP) in Imo State has raised the alarm over what it described as persistent vandalism and destruction of the party’s billboards and campaign installations across the state.
The party alleged that the attacks are being carried out by agents linked to the ruling party, particularly in Ideato North and Ideato South federal constituencies. According to APP, the repeated damage to billboards belonging to Ikenga Ugochinyere, a key party leader and stalwart, is part of a calculated effort to weaken opposition presence and stifle democratic participation in Imo State.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the party’s state Publicity Secretary, Cajetan Duke, APP warned that such actions represent a worrying slide toward intimidation and political harassment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The statement noted that the destruction of campaign materials goes beyond property damage, describing it as an attempt to intimidate supporters, discourage civic engagement and undermine the fairness required for credible elections.
APP maintained that the targeted attacks are aimed at muting calls for reform, accountability and improved governance in the state. While urging those responsible, including individuals allegedly acting for the ruling party, to immediately halt the vandalism, the party called on political stakeholders to embrace issue-based campaigns rather than resorting to sabotage and intimidation.
The party also appealed to security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS), to promptly investigate the incidents, identify those responsible and ensure they are prosecuted. It further called for enhanced protection of political materials, party facilities and democratic actors to ensure a peaceful and secure political atmosphere in Imo State.
Reaffirming its commitment to peaceful and inclusive democratic processes, APP urged the media, civil society groups, community leaders and residents of the state to collectively reject political violence and thuggery, and to promote tolerance, dialogue and fair competition as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.
