Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has spoken out about an alleged violent attack on him by suspected thugs in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
Sowore, who narrated his experience during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, October 30, 2026, said he was assaulted while visiting a restaurant to meet with some of his supporters.
Describing the incident, the activist alleged that about 20 attackers, armed with sticks and bottles, suddenly descended on him and issued death threats.
“They beat me like a criminal,” Sowore recounted, adding that the attackers warned him against returning to Ekiti State.
He further alleged that the incident was captured by the restaurant’s CCTV cameras but claimed that the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) had taken possession of the footage in an attempt to conceal evidence.
Sowore disclosed that he sustained injuries to his face and other parts of his body and was subsequently taken to a hospital for medical attention.
The AAC candidate also accused the Ekiti State Government of sponsoring the attack as part of an alleged attempt to suppress opposition voices. However, the government had yet to respond to the allegation as of the time of reporting.
Despite the incident, Sowore maintained that he would not be intimidated or silenced, insisting that his commitment to democracy and justice remained unwavering.
The attack has attracted widespread reactions, with Nigerians calling for an investigation and the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.

Attack on Sowore: A Disturbing Threat to Democratic Freedom
The alleged assault on Omoyele Sowore raises serious concerns about political tolerance, freedom of expression, and the safety of opposition figures in Nigeria.
Regardless of political differences, no individual should be subjected to violence for expressing opposing views or engaging with supporters. Such incidents, if established, undermine democratic values and weaken public confidence in the nation’s security institutions.
More importantly, the allegations surrounding the CCTV footage and possible political sponsorship demand urgent clarification. The police should conduct an independent and transparent investigation, establish the identities of those responsible, and ensure that justice is served. Democracy thrives on debate, not intimidation. Political disagreements must never become an excuse for violence.
