Nottingham Forest delivered one of their most impressive performances of the season on Saturday, defeating Manchester City 3-1 at home, with Liam Delap scoring twice to secure a much-needed Premier League victory.
The result marked Forest’s first home league win of the season and provided a significant boost to their survival hopes, while leaving Manchester City’s title ambitions facing another setback.
Forest set the tone early, showing aggression, confidence, and a willingness to punish City’s defensive weaknesses. Their approach paid off when Jair Cunha opened the scoring, capitalizing on a poor touch from Josko Gvardiol before driving past the City defender and firing a low effort into the bottom corner.
The hosts doubled their advantage through Delap, who demonstrated his attacking instincts and composure in front of goal. Xaver Schlager won possession in midfield and quickly released the striker, who exploited the space behind City’s defense before unleashing a powerful finish past Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Despite falling two goals behind, Manchester City had opportunities to respond before half-time. Erling Haaland came close, only for his effort to be cleared off the line, while Enzo Fernandez failed to convert a headed opportunity that could have brought the visitors back into the contest.
City returned from the break with greater attacking intent and found a way back into the game through Rayan Cherki. The midfielder produced a moment of individual brilliance, connecting with a clearance to fire an excellent half-volley into the net and reduce the deficit to 2-1.
The goal shifted the momentum in the city’s favor as they increased their possession and pushed forward in search of an equalizer. However, Forest remained disciplined defensively and continued to threaten on the counter-attack.
Their persistence eventually paid off when Delap delivered the decisive moment of the evening. Leading a quick counter-attack, the striker produced a superb curling finish into the top corner, completing his brace and restoring Forest’s two-goal advantage.
Beyond the scoreline, the victory highlighted Forest’s ability to combine defensive discipline with clinical attacking football against one of the Premier League’s strongest sides. Delap’s performance also underlined the importance of his £50m summer arrival from Chelsea, with the forward proving decisive when his team needed him most.
For Manchester City, the defeat represents a costly setback in the title race. They now sit six points behind league leaders Arsenal, who earlier secured a 1-0 victory over Hull City.
Forest, meanwhile, climbed to 16th place, moving two points clear of the relegation zone. More importantly, the result could provide the confidence and momentum needed to strengthen their fight for Premier League survival.
