Woman Arrested for Allegedly Poisoning Co-Wife’s Two Children in Niger State, One Dies

SNOW TV NEWS DESK
The Niger State Police Command has arrested a woman, identified as Mariya Abdullahi, over the alleged poisoning of her co-wife’s two young children in the Takuti community, Lapai Local Government Area of the state. One of the children has died, while the other is receiving medical treatment.

The disturbing incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Friday, November 6, 2026, when the suspect allegedly gave the children, aged four and nine, a cup containing a substance suspected to be poison.

According to the police, the children became unconscious shortly after consuming the substance and were immediately rushed to a nearby medical facility for emergency attention. Unfortunately, the nine-year-old victim reportedly died shortly after arriving at the clinic, while the younger child was referred to a general hospital, where she is responding to treatment.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Saturday, November 7, saying officers responded to the report and subsequently arrested the suspect.

During preliminary interrogation, Abdullahi allegedly confessed to the crime, claiming that a friend influenced her to carry out the act. She reportedly told investigators that her inability to have a child for her husband was a factor behind the incident.

The allegation has once again drawn attention to the dangers of domestic rivalry and unresolved tensions within some polygamous households, particularly when personal frustrations and external influence are allowed to escalate into violence.

However, the circumstances surrounding the alleged involvement of the suspect’s friend and the full motive behind the attack remain subject to further police investigation.

The police spokesperson disclosed that the suspect is expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Minna for further investigation and prosecution.

Meanwhile, the surviving child remains under medical care as authorities continue their investigation into the tragic incident.

The case serves as a grim reminder that children should never become victims of conflicts or grievances between adults.
