Dominik Szoboszlai Speaks on Mohamed Salah Amid Liverpool Uncertainty

Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has opened up about his close bond with Mohamed Salah, revealing that the duo stayed in near-daily contact while the Egyptian star was away at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

With Salah set to return to Merseyside this week and uncertainty surrounding his availability for Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League clash against Marseille, speculation has grown following reports of tension between the forward and manager Arne Slot. Szoboszlai, however, declined to comment on the situation, stressing that it remains a private matter.

“That’s something between him and me. He’ll return and we’ll move forward. The decision lies with the manager and the club,” he said.

The Hungarian midfielder confirmed that communication between them was constant during Salah’s AFCON stint.

“Honestly, we spoke almost every day. We talk about everything. I follow him and he follows me—we’re always in touch,” Szoboszlai added.

Slot recently expressed happiness at having Salah back, especially after Liverpool’s frustrating draw with Burnley, where they dominated possession and chances but scored just once despite 32 shots. Szoboszlai also missed a penalty in that match.

Reflecting on the game, he said Liverpool showed improvement against a deep defensive setup and must replicate that intensity against Marseille, who prefer to build from the back.

Szoboszlai also addressed criticism following Liverpool’s FA Cup match against Barnsley, where he was accused of disrespect after a risky back-heel attempt led to a goal.

“It’s been a difficult week. I made a mistake, but it wasn’t disrespectful. I’d play the same way against any top team,” he said.

Despite missing penalties recently, the 25-year-old remains confident and ready to step up if needed, noting that Salah remains the first-choice penalty taker when available.
