Al-Kholood head coach, Des Buckingham, has lavished praise on William Troost-Ekong, describing the former Super Eagles captain as an invaluable figure whose impact cannot be replaced following his departure from the Saudi Pro League club.
Troost-Ekong, who arrived at Al-Kholood from Greek side PAOK in the summer of 2024, completed a January transfer to Qatari outfit Al Ahli SC, ending a short but highly influential spell with the club.
Speaking at a press briefing, Buckingham acknowledged that while the club would bring in a replacement on the pitch, matching Troost-Ekong’s overall presence and influence would be impossible.
“You can’t replace William, and I don’t want to replace him either as a player or as a person,” Buckingham said. “Someone will come in to fill his role on the field, but that’s a different thing entirely.”
The Al-Kholood coach went on to describe the Nigerian defender as the best captain he has worked with, noting that his leadership extended well beyond matchdays and played a major role in shaping the team’s culture.
“William is without doubt the finest leader I’ve worked with at this football club,” he stated.
Buckingham also revealed that Troost-Ekong was instrumental in helping him settle quickly after taking charge at Al-Kholood, while also setting high standards within the squad.
“He played a huge role in helping me settle in and in ensuring the right culture and environment were maintained,” he added.
As the club moves forward without one of its most influential figures, Buckingham stressed that Troost-Ekong’s legacy will endure.
“He guided and supported the players throughout that journey. I honestly don’t think we can replace William,” he said.
Troost-Ekong departs Al-Kholood after a successful stint, having played a key role in the club’s battle to retain their Saudi Pro League status.
