2026 World Cup: I Won’t Return – Di Maria Declines Comeback With Messi, Ronaldo

Argentina great Ángel Di María has ruled out a return to international football at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, turning down suggestions to line up alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 37-year-old winger, who enjoyed a long and successful spell with the Argentine national team, shared many historic moments with close friend Messi during his international career.

Speaking in an interview with AS, Di María reflected on his future and said he is content with what he has achieved in football.

While admitting that playing at another World Cup would be appealing, Di María explained that he believes his time with the national team has come to an end, having already accomplished all his career goals.

He revealed that he initially planned to retire from international duty after the 2022 World Cup but was convinced to continue until the 2024 Copa América.

“It’s not about lacking desire; I feel my cycle is complete. I achieved everything I set out to do, and now a new generation is taking over. It’s the right moment to step aside,” Di María said.

“After the World Cup in Qatar, my decision was already made, but the team encouraged me to play one last Copa América. We won it, and it felt like the perfect ending. Now, it’s time for others to shine,” he added.

Di María was a vital figure for Argentina over the years, winning a medal in every major tournament he competed in.

The former Real Madrid star won Olympic gold with Messi in 2008, lifted the Copa América in 2021, claimed the Finalissima in 2022, captured the World Cup later that year, and secured another Copa América title in 2024.

Now in the twilight of his career, the ex-Manchester United forward has declined invitations to reunite with veteran stars such as Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Luka Modrić at the 2026 World Cup.

Di María will remain in Argentina, continuing the quiet life he has embraced since retiring from international football in 2024.
