Kano Women Affairs Commissioner Defects to APC, Leaves Kwankwasiyya

The Kano State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Children and Persons with Special Needs, Hajiya Amina Sani, popularly known as Amina HOD, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), signalling a significant development in the state’s evolving political realignment.

Amina, widely regarded as a strong grassroots mobiliser and a prominent figure within the Kwankwasiyya Movement, has formally exited the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to join Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and other top government officials who recently moved to the ruling APC.

The defection was announced on Sunday in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Garba Waiya, who described the move as “a defining and historic moment” in Kano State’s political history.

According to Waiya, the commissioner has embraced the “Kano First” ideology to fast-track development in the state and foster peaceful coexistence.

He noted that the defection is part of a broader political shift gaining momentum across Kano, one that prioritises the collective future of the state over individual or factional interests.

“This movement is both genuine and practical, as the people of Kano have decided to take charge of their political destiny,” the statement said.

“It represents a platform for positive change aimed at repositioning Kano politically, economically and socially, and restoring the state to its rightful place.”

Waiya further stressed that key state institutions remain firmly aligned with Governor Yusuf and committed to delivering on the administration’s development agenda.

He dismissed criticisms from opposition elements, describing their reactions as “mischievous political theatrics” designed to cause distractions.

“Power is not lost when core institutions remain steadfastly committed to developmental transformation,” he said.

“Authority is not weakened when the machinery of government remains active, focused on governance, and resistant to political distractions.”

Waiya assured that the current administration would continue to serve the people of Kano with dedication and would not be swayed by political pressure or compelled to compromise its mandate.

It will be recalled that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, alongside 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight federal legislators, and 44 local government chairmen, defected to the APC on January 26, 2026, marking a dramatic shift in Kano’s political alignment.
