Benzema Could Quit Al-Ittihad for League Leaders Al-Hilal

Karim Benzema is reportedly in talks over a possible switch to Saudi Pro League leaders Al-Hilal following a fallout with his current club, Al-Ittihad.

Sources say negotiations are ongoing, with Al-Hilal keen to secure the striker on a short-term deal covering the remainder of the season. However, Benzema’s representatives are said to be pushing for a contract lasting at least 18 months.

A source quoted by AFP revealed that while Al-Hilal are willing to sign the former Real Madrid star for the final six months of his existing deal, his agent is demanding a longer agreement.

Reports also suggest Benzema is dissatisfied with a proposed contract extension from Al-Ittihad, a disagreement believed to be behind his absence from the club’s last two league fixtures.

The 2022 Ballon d’Or winner has scored eight goals in 14 league appearances this season. Despite that, sources close to the player claim he was unhappy with an offer presented by Saudi Pro League sporting director Michael Emenalo, describing it as “insulting” and equivalent to “playing for free,” aside from image rights.

Both Al-Hilal and Al-Ittihad are owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, a situation that could play a key role in the ongoing talks.

Benzema, who joined Al-Ittihad in 2023 after a 14-year spell at Real Madrid, enjoyed a successful debut season in Saudi Arabia, scoring 21 goals and helping the club win the league title. This season, however, Al-Ittihad trail Al-Hilal by 12 points in the standings.

When asked about Benzema’s recent absence, Al-Ittihad head coach Sergio Conceicao declined to comment, saying the issue should be addressed by club officials, while describing the striker as “a top-level professional and an extraordinary player.”
