The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has filed fresh charges against social media personality and self-acclaimed relationship therapist Blessing Nkiruka Okoro over an alleged ₦13 million fraud case in Lagos.
Blessing CEO was arraigned on Wednesday before Justice Yelim Bogoro of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi by the Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 of the anti-graft agency.
According to the EFCC, the six-count charge centres on allegations of false representation and the retention of funds allegedly obtained through deceptive means. The commission claims that the case involves a total of ₦13 million.
The charges reportedly stem from petitions submitted by several individuals and organisations, including the Nigeria Cancer Society.
Investigators alleged that Blessing CEO used social media platforms to claim she was battling Stage 4 breast cancer and required financial assistance for medical treatment. The EFCC said the appeal prompted members of the public to make donations toward the purported treatment.
However, the commission alleged that documents presented to support the cancer diagnosis were later discovered to be falsified. According to investigators, the medical records used during the fundraising campaign were not authentic.
Based on these findings, the EFCC accused the influencer of obtaining money under false pretences and retaining funds allegedly received from donors who responded to the appeal.
The matter is expected to continue before the Federal High Court, where prosecutors will seek to establish the allegations against the defendant.
As the legal proceedings continue, Blessing CEO remains presumed innocent until proven guilty by the court.
