Ikeja Electric Plc has issued a strong warning to residents and business operators in Lagos over the increasing presence of illegal structures and commercial activities under high-voltage power lines, describing the practice as extremely dangerous and potentially fatal.
The electricity distribution company said operating shops, workshops or constructing buildings within designated Right-of-Way corridors puts lives at serious risk, exposing occupants to hazards such as electrocution, fire outbreaks and severe injuries—even without direct contact with live cables.
According to the company, the danger is heightened during the rainy season, when wet conditions significantly increase the chances of electrical accidents.
In a public notice released on Monday, Ikeja Electric disclosed that several areas in Lagos continue to experience persistent encroachment on power transmission and distribution corridors. Locations identified include Shogbesan Street in Alimosho and AIT Road in Alagbado.
The firm stressed that such developments violate Lagos State safety regulations, noting that Right-of-Way corridors are strictly reserved for power infrastructure and are not approved for residential, commercial or industrial activities.
Ikeja Electric warned that defaulters risk the immediate demolition of illegal structures, loss of property without compensation, and possible legal action.
Residents and traders were advised to desist from erecting kiosks, shops or stalls under or near 11kV distribution lines, as well as 33kV, 132kV and 330kV transmission lines. Those currently operating in such locations were urged to relocate promptly.
Reiterating its commitment to public safety, the company said it will continue to collaborate with relevant authorities to eliminate unsafe practices and prevent avoidable accidents linked to electricity infrastructure.
The distribution company urged Lagos residents to comply with safety regulations and prioritise the protection of lives and property.
