BREAKING : Former Benue Governor, Suswam, Resigns From PDP

Former Benue State Governor and one-time Senator representing Benue North-East, Gabriel Suswam, has formally withdrawn his membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Naija News reports that Suswam announced his resignation in a letter dated Wednesday, February 4, 2026, addressed to the PDP Chairman of Mbagber Council Ward in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.

In the letter, the former governor explained that his decision was the result of prolonged and unresolved internal crises within the party.

“This decision has not been taken lightly,” Suswam wrote, recalling that the PDP had given him the platform to serve Nigeria as a member of the House of Representatives between 1999 and 2007, Governor of Benue State from 2007 to 2015, and Senator from 2019 to 2023.

He expressed appreciation for the confidence and opportunities the party extended to him over the years.

However, Suswam said the PDP had strayed from its core principles of unity, internal democracy, and effective opposition, lamenting that leadership tussles, weak discipline, and ideological disputes had been allowed to persist without a clear plan for resolution.

“Despite repeated interventions, reconciliation efforts, and public assurances, the party remains trapped in deep internal dysfunction,” he stated.

He further described the PDP as being “in political intensive care,” noting that there was no agreement within the party on either the nature of its problems or how to fix them.

According to Suswam, the situation made it increasingly difficult to align his continued membership with his personal beliefs and political ideals.

“I believe political parties should be platforms for ideas, discipline, and constructive engagement, not theatres of endless internal battles,” he said.

He added that the current state of the PDP no longer reflected those values, making his decision to leave both “honourable and necessary.”

Suswam did not reveal his next political move but wished the party well, expressing hope that it would eventually overcome its internal challenges.

“Kindly accept my resignation and convey my gratitude to members at all levels for the journey we shared,” the letter concluded.
