Atiku: ADC Constitution Has No Zoning Clause, Silent on 2027 Presidential Bid

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has stated that zoning is not provided for in the constitution of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stressing that the party has no intention of zoning its presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general election.

Naija News reports that Atiku made the remark during a courtesy visit to former military president, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, at his Hilltop residence in Minna, Niger State.

Speaking at the meeting, Atiku explained that zoning is not entrenched in the ADC’s constitution, noting that among Nigeria’s major political parties, only the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has zoning formally enshrined in its guiding document.

According to him, the ADC operates under a different framework and does not constitutionally mandate rotational presidency or the zoning of elective positions.

While addressing the zoning debate, Atiku declined to state whether he intends to contest the 2027 presidential election on the ADC platform.

The former presidential candidate, who contested in the last general election, neither confirmed nor dismissed a potential bid, leaving observers to speculate about his political plans ahead of 2027.

Atiku also commented on the ongoing national conversation surrounding electronic transmission of election results, an issue that has remained in the spotlight following recent amendments to the Electoral Act.
