Former Deputy Governor of Delta State, Benjamin Elue, has died at the age of 85.

Elue served as deputy governor between 1999 and 2007 under the administration of former Governor James Onanefe Ibori. His tenure is widely regarded as a formative period in Delta State’s return to democratic governance.

During his time in office, Elue was known for his close working relationship with Ibori, playing a significant role in shaping policies and governance structures that influenced later administrations.

In a tribute shared on his official Facebook page, Ibori described the late statesman as a loyal and dependable partner in leadership.

“Heartbroken to lose my gentleman Deputy Governor, Chief Benjamin Elue. Thank you for the memories and the legacy. Rest on, Alum,” he wrote.

Immediate past Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, also expressed deep sorrow over Elue’s passing.

“I received with deep sadness the news of the passing of our revered political leader, Chief Benjamin Sunday Elue, who served as Deputy Governor of Delta State from 1999 to 2007,” Okowa stated.

He described Elue as an accomplished teacher, respected community figure, and seasoned politician whose life and service left a lasting mark on the state.

“On behalf of my family, I extend heartfelt condolences to his family, the people of Aniocha North, and Delta State as a whole. May God grant his soul eternal rest and comfort all those he leaves behind,” he added.
