Lagos State Government Closes Access Bank Branch Over Environmental Breach

The Lagos State Government has sealed off a branch of Access Bank for violating environmental regulations.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Thursday.

He explained that the action followed a whistleblower alert, which triggered an investigation by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office. The probe revealed that the branch, situated on Land Bridge Avenue in Oniru, Victoria Island, had been discharging untreated faecal waste into public drainage systems.

According to Wahab, the facility was shut down during a joint enforcement operation after officials confirmed the environmental offence. The illegal discharge reportedly caused unpleasant odours and contributed to pollution, contravening existing state environmental laws.

“Following a tip-off, the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office conducted a joint enforcement operation and sealed the Access Bank branch after confirming the unlawful release of untreated sewage into drainage channels,” he stated.

He further noted that the property would be sanctioned in accordance with environmental regulations.

The enforcement forms part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to curb environmental violations and enhance sanitation standards, particularly in high-traffic commercial hubs such as Victoria Island.
