Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has claimed that his late father, Fela Kuti, may have contracted HIV from one of his wives.
Speaking during an Instagram livestream, Seun rejected accusations that Fela infected his partners, insisting instead that the music icon was the victim.
He explained that his father allowed his wives the same freedom he had, noting that they were not restricted from having relationships with other men, as long as such activities did not occur in his home.
Seun described this approach as one of Fela’s major mistakes, adding that the openness in his relationships may have contributed to how he contracted the illness.
He also stressed that while his father was not perfect, he remained a figure who stood for humanity and freedom.
