A judge has approved Lil Nas X’s request to enter a mental health diversion program following his arrest for allegedly assaulting police officers in Los Angeles in August 2025.
During a court hearing on April 6, the California judge ruled that the Grammy-winning artist, whose real name is Montero Lamar Hill, could have the charges dismissed if he successfully completes the program and stays out of legal trouble for the next two years.
Speaking after the hearing, Hill expressed relief, saying he was grateful and acknowledged the situation could have turned out worse.
The rapper was arrested late at night on Ventura Boulevard while reportedly walking nearly naked, wearing only underwear and cowboy boots. He was charged with assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest, and was later taken to the hospital amid concerns of a possible overdose.
If convicted, Hill could face up to five years in prison, particularly if he fails to complete the court-ordered treatment. He has already pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Following the incident, the artist was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. According to his lawyer, Christy O’Connor, the judge described his actions at the time of arrest as out of character. The court also noted that he appears to be improving and responding well to treatment.
The presiding judge, Alan Schneider, granted the diversion request, emphasizing that both Hill and society benefit when he receives proper care.
Mental health diversion programs are designed to offer treatment alternatives for individuals with mental health conditions who are involved in the criminal justice system.
Hill’s legal team revealed that he spent two months in a treatment facility in Arizona after the arrest. Following the court session, he appeared in good spirits, smiling and giving a thumbs-up to reporters.
In the aftermath of the incident, his father, Robert Stafford, shared that family challenges — including his mother’s struggle with addiction — have weighed heavily on the young star, who also faces the pressures of supporting others financially.
