A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rotimi Amaechi, has called on Nigerians to vote out the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
Amaechi made the statement on Wednesday during the #OccupyINEC protest in Abuja, organised by the ADC following the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s decision to withdraw recognition from some party leaders amid internal disputes.
The protest drew prominent political figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Senate President David Mark, and Rauf Aregbesola.
Addressing journalists, Amaechi said it was time for Nigerians to remove the ruling party from power, just as the APC unseated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015.
He warned that if re-elected, the APC could undermine the nation’s capital and even relocate the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) from Abuja to Lagos.
“The APC forced the PDP out of office, and now it is our turn to do the same. If they remain in power, they could damage this capital or even move it to Lagos. Nigerians must vote them out,” he said.
Amaechi also accused President Bola Tinubu of weakening democratic institutions and alleged that the ruling party is apprehensive about future elections.
He criticised the reported appointment of Joash Amupitan as INEC chairman, claiming it was aimed at disadvantaging opposition parties ahead of the polls.
According to him, restricting party registrations and influencing electoral processes reflects fear of defeat, insisting that despite such moves, the APC would lose the next election.
