PDP Schedules First NEC Meeting at Wadata Plaza

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is set to convene its first National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting at its national headquarters, Wadata Plaza, following the recent reopening of the secretariat by the police.

The party’s office had been shut since November last year after a violent clash between factions loyal to Tanimu Turaki and those backing Abdulrahman Mohammed, both claiming leadership of the party.

Tensions escalated further in March when the Court of Appeal nullified the Ibadan convention that produced the Turaki-led leadership. Leveraging that judgment, the Mohammed faction—reportedly supported by Nyesom Wike—went on to organise a parallel convention in Abuja.

Monday’s NEC meeting is expected to be attended largely by members aligned with the Mohammed-led camp. Key figures anticipated at the gathering include Nyesom Wike, Bukola Saraki, and Okezie Ikpeazu, among others.

Meanwhile, the Wike-aligned faction has expressed its intention to field a presidential candidate in the 2027 elections, despite internal disagreements.

Notably, Wike has publicly declared support for the re-election bid of Bola Tinubu, while also raising concerns about the party’s financial capacity to fund a presidential campaign.

However, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, has dismissed claims that the party may not present a candidate. He stated that the NEC meeting will address key issues, including zoning arrangements and the cost of nomination forms.
