FG files 13-count treason charge against alleged coup plot suspects

The Federal Government has filed a 13-count charge at the Federal High Cou

rt in Abuja against individuals accused of plotting a coup aimed at removing President Bola Tinubu from office.

The accused include 16 military officers, among them a retired major general, a retired naval captain, a serving police inspector, and others who were arrested on October 31, 2025, over allegations of planning to overthrow the government.

They are facing accusations of waging war against Nigeria, as well as offences bordering on treason and terrorism.

In January 2026, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) confirmed that a coup plot had been uncovered. The DHQ Director of Defence Information, Samaila Uba, stated that investigations carried out under established military procedures revealed the involvement of some personnel.

He further explained that the affected officers would be arraigned before the appropriate military judicial panels for disciplinary and legal proceedings.
