A grand jury has indicted Susan Hutson, the sheriff of Orleans Parish, following an investigation into the dramatic escape of 10 inmates from a jail in New Orleans.
According to reports by the New York Post, Hutson is not accused of directly assisting the inmates in their escape. The prisoners reportedly broke out through a hole behind a toilet, triggering a weeks-long manhunt before all were eventually recaptured. However, Liz Murrill stated that a state investigation found the escape was largely due to poor oversight and mismanagement within the sheriff’s office.
The grand jury issued a 30-count indictment against Hutson, including charges of malfeasance, obstruction of justice, and falsification of public records. Authorities say her failure to meet basic legal obligations and implement necessary security measures contributed significantly to the jailbreak.
In a statement, Murrill said that although Hutson did not physically aid the escape, her negligence created the conditions that made it possible.
Speaking in a farewell address, Hutson acknowledged the challenges faced by her office, describing the incident as a severe test. She maintained that her team handled the situation with urgency and professionalism, claiming the department emerged stronger.
Court documents show Hutson’s bail has been set at $300,000, with conditions requiring her to surrender her passport and remain within the state. The office’s Chief Financial Officer, Bianka Brown, was also indicted on 20 related charges.
Investigators revealed that the inmates left behind graffiti reading “Too Easy LOL” after escaping through the concealed hole and climbing over a barbed-wire fence. Authorities were unaware of the escape for over seven hours.
The incident drew criticism from state officials and local leaders, who accused Hutson of poor leadership and delays in notifying law enforcement agencies. Hutson had initially blamed political opponents for orchestrating the escape, though she provided no evidence. She later cited faulty door locks and longstanding funding issues affecting the jail’s infrastructure.
