U.S. President Donald Trump has hinted that the ongoing conflicts involving Ukraine and Iran could be resolved within a comparable timeframe, following a 90-minute phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Describing the conversation as “frank and businesslike,” Trump indicated that progress may soon be made in ending the prolonged Russia-Ukraine war, while also touching on tensions surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme.
During the discussion, Trump reportedly suggested a limited ceasefire in Ukraine. In response, Putin is said to have proposed a temporary halt in fighting to align with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations on May 9.
Trump expressed confidence that a resolution could come quickly, adding that he believes Putin has long been willing to strike a deal but was previously constrained by outside factors. He emphasized his priorities during the call, reportedly telling the Russian leader that ending the war should come before any cooperation on Iran.
The talks also covered Iran’s nuclear activities, with Putin offering potential support to the United States on issues related to uranium enrichment. Trump acknowledged the offer but reiterated a shared objective of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Maintaining a firm stance, Trump claimed that recent military actions have significantly weakened Iran’s capabilities, including major damage to its missile production infrastructure and military systems.
“We’re not going to allow Iran to develop a nuclear weapon,” Trump said, warning that the U.S. remains prepared to take further action if diplomatic efforts fail.
Despite the tough rhetoric, diplomatic engagement continues. The latest call marks the 12th known interaction between Trump and Putin since Trump’s return to office in 2025, with both leaders agreeing to sustain high-level discussions aimed at easing tensions and resolving the conflicts.
