Calling Wizkid ‘New Fela’ Is an Insult – Seun Kuti Blasts Fans

Grammy-nominated musician Seun Kuti, son of late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has condemned comparisons between Afrobeats star Wizkid and his father, describing such claims as disrespectful and insulting.

Seun made the remarks during a recent Instagram livestream, where he warned Wizkid’s fanbase, popularly known as Wizkid FC, to stop referring to the singer as a modern-day version of Fela.

According to him, likening Wizkid—or any contemporary artist—to Fela diminishes the legacy and impact of the Afrobeat pioneer.

“Wizkid FC should keep Fela’s name out of your mouths,” Seun said. “Trying to brand your artiste as the new Fela is an insult. When it became obvious that the shoes were too big to fill, and people like me refused to tolerate that disrespect, you became upset. But the truth remains—it is an insult.”

He added that the comparisons stem from ignorance rather than genuine defiance.

“I don’t mind disrespect when it comes from defiance, but this one comes from ignorance,” he stated. “Wizkid fans keep dragging Fela into unnecessary conversations. Why must Fela always be part of your petty debates?”

Seun also argued that extreme fan rivalries have negatively affected the music industry, noting that some artists are unable to collaborate because of fan-driven hostility.

He further criticised Wizkid FC, describing the group as overly zealous and urging them to focus on enjoying their favourite artiste’s music without making comparisons.

“Can’t you enjoy your artist’s music without comparing it to something else?” he asked. “The reason you keep comparing is because the music does not fully satisfy you spiritually. You may act like you enjoy it, but deep down, you are not fulfilled.”
