Why I’m Leaving – Peter Obi Confirms Exit from ADC

Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has announced his decision to leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing ongoing internal challenges and an unfavourable political environment.

In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, Obi described the current political atmosphere as increasingly toxic and discouraging. He noted that even within alliances, individuals often face criticism and opposition from unexpected quarters.

He clarified that his departure was not due to any personal conflict with party leaders, including David Mark and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, whom he said he continues to respect.

According to Obi, persistent internal disputes, legal battles, and divisions within the party influenced his decision. He likened the situation to similar challenges he experienced in the Labour Party Nigeria, stressing that such distractions hinder meaningful political engagement.

He reiterated that his actions are not driven by personal ambition but by a desire to see improvements in Nigeria’s security, economy, and overall welfare of citizens. Obi maintained that leadership, in his view, should be rooted in service, sacrifice, and uplifting others—not oppression or personal gain.

Reflecting on his experiences, Obi said the political space has become one where integrity is often misunderstood, humility is seen as weakness, and genuine service is undervalued. He added that even sincere efforts to contribute positively are sometimes met with suspicion and criticism.

Despite stepping away from the ADC, Obi expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, reaffirming his commitment to advocating for a better society built on justice, compassion, and equal opportunities.

He concluded by emphasizing that his ultimate goal is not holding political office, but seeing a Nigeria where citizens feel safe, economically stable, and hopeful about their future.
