AAC Deputy National Chairperson Ifemeludike Withdraws From Anambra Senate Race

Former African Action Congress (AAC) senatorial candidate for Anambra Central, Chioma Ifemeludike, has withdrawn from the 2027 senatorial election, citing personal convictions and recent political developments as the reasons behind her decision.

Ifemeludike, who also serves as the AAC Deputy National Chairperson for the South-East, disclosed her withdrawal in a letter addressed to the party’s Acting National Chairperson. The letter, which was made available to journalists on Friday, formally communicated her decision to step away from the race.

She had emerged as the party’s consensus candidate during the AAC primary election held in May.

In the letter, Ifemeludike informed the party’s National Working Committee that she no longer wished to contest for the Anambra Central Senatorial District seat in the 2027 general election. She also requested that her name be removed from every record, process, and activity connected with the party’s senatorial ticket.

Explaining her decision, she said it followed careful reflection and was rooted in her commitment to justice, accountability, and the protection of vulnerable members of society.

“I hereby formally notify the National Working Committee and the leadership of the African Action Congress of my decision to withdraw my interest and aspiration to contest for the office of Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District under the platform of our great party in the 2027 General Elections,” she wrote.

“This decision has been taken after careful reflection and in accordance with my personal convictions, principles, and commitment to justice, accountability, and the protection of vulnerable members of society.”

According to Ifemeludike, recent events further reinforced her resolve to withdraw from the contest.

She specifically referenced the role of Doris Ogala Umezurike in the controversy surrounding Baby Testimony and the child’s physically challenged mother, arguing that the handling of the matter raised serious concerns.

In her view, the incident prolonged the suffering of the child’s mother, subjected her to public humiliation, and cast doubt on whether justice was being served for the child.

She noted that these developments ultimately convinced her to abandon her senatorial ambition and dedicate her efforts to advocating for justice, accountability, and the protection of vulnerable people.

Ifemeludike concluded by reiterating her request that the AAC remove her name entirely from all records and considerations relating to the Anambra Central senatorial candidacy.
