ACF Says Tinubu Losing Northern Support, Questions Atiku and Obi as Alternatives

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has stated that President Bola Tinubu has lost considerable political goodwill in northern Nigeria since the 2023 elections.

Speaking on an Arise Television programme, the ACF National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Tukur Mohammed-Baba, also said that neither former Vice President Atiku Abubakar nor Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, currently offers a convincing alternative ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He said many voters in the North are increasingly dissatisfied with the country’s leadership, adding that issues such as insecurity, economic hardship and poor governance remain major concerns.

According to him, political discussions in the region are now driven more by performance concerns than by religion, ethnicity or personality.

On Tinubu, Mohammed-Baba said the impact of his policies on citizens had been disappointing, while also expressing concern that insecurity in the country appears to be worsening despite government efforts.

He added that some communities in the North have been forced to abandon their farmlands due to bandit attacks, warning that reliance on self-help undermines state authority.

Commenting on Atiku Abubakar, he described the former vice president as a “recurring decimal,” arguing that he has not presented a clear alternative policy direction beyond criticism of the current administration.

On Peter Obi, he said the former governor has lost some of the goodwill he previously enjoyed in the North, citing frequent party changes and questioning his political direction.

Mohammed-Baba also dismissed claims linking other politicians to strong alternative positioning, arguing that clear policy articulation remains lacking.

He, however, declined to endorse any particular candidate for 2027, saying the region is still observing developments.
