Ahmad Gumi Calls For Amnesty For Bandits, Urges FG To Change Strategy

Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Ahmad Gumi, has called on the Federal Government to grant amnesty to armed bandits as part of efforts to tackle insecurity across Nigeria.

According to reports, Gumi suggested that the government should adopt a rehabilitation and reintegration model similar to that used for repentant Boko Haram members who surrendered to the military.

He made the remarks on Monday during a press briefing at his residence in Kaduna State.

The cleric argued that years of relying solely on military action had not successfully ended banditry or insurgency.

He said Nigeria should rethink its strategy, stating that engagement and rehabilitation could be more effective than force alone.

Gumi also referenced past efforts in Katsina State, where some armed groups were reportedly engaged through dialogue and incentives, questioning why a similar approach could not be adopted nationally.

He further proposed measures such as removing bandits from forest hideouts and providing education for their children as part of a broader reintegration plan.

The cleric claimed that some armed groups had indicated willingness to surrender but feared arrest or persecution after laying down their weapons, stressing that assurances of safety would encourage compliance.

He insisted that amnesty could help build trust and support disarmament efforts.

Denial Of Allegations

Ahmad Gumi also dismissed claims that he supports terrorism or violent groups, saying such accusations were false and did not originate from him.

He reaffirmed his commitment to peace and expressed hope that Nigeria would overcome its security challenges.

Gumi added that lasting peace would require addressing underlying issues such as poverty, ignorance, and social injustice, alongside collective efforts from both national and international stakeholders.
