Cape Verde head coach Bubista is confident his team can pull off another major upset when they face defending champions Argentina national football team in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Miami on Friday.
The Blue Sharks have emerged as one of the tournament’s surprise packages in their World Cup debut. After holding Spain national football team to a draw in the group stage, they stunned Uruguay national football team to secure a place in the knockout rounds.
Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, cruised through the group stage and remain among the favourites to successfully defend their World Cup title.
Despite the daunting challenge, Bubista believes his players are capable of making more history.
“We’re ecstatic. Reaching the knockout phase means making history yet again,” Bubista told FIFA.com.
He added that while his team respects Argentina, they will approach the encounter with confidence.
“Now we get to play against Argentina. In football, anything can happen. We’ll show them the same respect we’ve shown every opponent, but we’ll compete.
“We’re living a dream, but once we step onto the pitch we can’t see faces. We’ll approach this game exactly as we did against Spain or any other team.”
Bubista also described the opportunity to face Messi as a special moment for his squad.
“For us, it’s a huge privilege to face the player many consider the greatest of all time.
“Will it be the No. 10 against our ten islands? Of course. But we’ll continue to play with character, discipline and our own identity.”
The Round of 32 clash between Cape Verde and Argentina is scheduled to kick off at 11:00 p.m. Nigerian time on Friday, July 3.
