FEC Approves Sweeping NYSC Reforms, Introduces New Uniform and Six-Week Orientation

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a wide-ranging reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), introducing a new uniform and several structural changes aimed at modernising the scheme for the first time since its establishment 53 years ago.

The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, announced the development on Monday via his official X account, describing the decision as a significant milestone in repositioning the NYSC to better serve the needs of young Nigerians while preserving its core objective of promoting national unity.

According to the minister, the reforms are designed to transform the NYSC into a more skills-oriented, productivity-driven and youth-focused institution in line with President Bola Tinubu’s vision of building a $1 trillion economy.

Among the key changes approved by the council is the introduction of a technology-driven call-up system and a risk-based deployment process aimed at improving the safety and welfare of corps members.

The orientation programme will also be extended into a six-week exercise, with greater emphasis placed on leadership development, entrepreneurship, digital literacy and specialised career pathways.

Olawande added that corps members will now be assigned to places of primary assignment based on their academic qualifications, professional skills and career aspirations to enhance productivity and relevance.

Other reforms include the introduction of a national grading and certification system for orientation camps to improve standards, a new graduation ceremony that will replace the traditional Passing Out Parade, and a redesigned NYSC uniform intended to reflect professionalism and national identity.

The minister explained that the review process began in 2025 through a collaborative effort involving the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, the Federal Ministry of Education and the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination.

He further disclosed that the FEC has directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Federal Ministry of Youth Development to begin the process of amending the NYSC Act and relevant regulations to accommodate the approved reforms.

Describing the initiative as an investment in Nigeria’s future, Olawande said the reforms represent a renewed commitment to empowering young people and making the NYSC more impactful, relevant and responsive to the country’s evolving development needs.
