AS Monaco midfielder Paul Pogba has suggested that Bruno Fernandes would be a strong contender for the Ballon d’Or if he played for a dominant team like Manchester City.
Speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, the former Manchester United star praised Fernandes’ abilities but noted that greater team success could elevate his global recognition.
“Bruno Fernandes, in other top clubs, would be in the top three for the Ballon d’Or,” Pogba said.
He added that placing Fernandes in a more dominant system like Manchester City would significantly boost his chances of winning the prestigious individual award.
Fernandes has been one of Manchester United’s key performers this season, recording 18 Premier League assists and nearing the single-season assist record jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
The Portuguese midfielder also recently provided a crucial assist in United’s victory over Chelsea, highlighting his consistent impact through goals, creativity, and leadership.
His performances have earned praise from teammates, including goalkeeper Senne Lammens, who described him as a player who sets high standards within the squad.
However, Pogba emphasised that individual honours are often influenced by team achievements, noting that players tend to receive less recognition when their teams are not winning major trophies.
Since joining Manchester United from Sporting CP in 2020 for £47 million, Fernandes has made over 300 appearances and scored more than 100 goals. Despite transfer interest from clubs in the Saudi Pro League, he has remained at Old Trafford and is under contract until 2027.
Pogba’s remarks have reignited debate over the role team success plays in determining winners of major individual awards like the Ballon d’Or.
