FG Hints at Fresh Review of ₦70,000 Minimum Wage Amid Rising Cost of Living

The Federal Government has indicated that the current ₦70,000 national minimum wage could soon be reviewed, citing the country’s changing economic realities and rising cost of living.

Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, disclosed this on Thursday during the Good Governance Summit 2026, organized by Working People United (WoPU) in Abuja.

According to Gbajabiamila, the Tinubu administration remains committed to ensuring workers receive fair wages that reflect prevailing economic conditions. He recalled that President Bola Tinubu approved the ₦70,000 minimum wage in July 2024, more than doubling the previous ₦30,000 benchmark, while also reducing the wage review cycle from five years to three years to allow for more regular adjustments.

He noted that although the ₦70,000 wage was a major milestone, it must be reassessed in line with current economic realities.

“The ₦70,000 wage, which was a milestone in 2024, must be honestly reassessed against today’s realities. When the time comes to review the national minimum wage, this administration will engage labour not as an adversary, but as a partner,” Gbajabiamila said.

He urged organized labour to continue engaging the government through dialogue, stressing that collaboration would produce better outcomes for workers and the economy than confrontation.

Also speaking at the summit, Minister of Labour and Employment Muhammad Dingyadi said the true measure of good governance lies in how government policies improve the lives of citizens through decent jobs, higher productivity, stronger social protection, and expanded economic opportunities.

Earlier, National Coordinator of Working People United, Williams Akporeha, described Nigerian workers as the backbone of the nation’s economy, emphasizing that sustainable national development depends on improving workers’ welfare and productivity.

He added that the summit brought together stakeholders from various sectors to promote collaboration and generate ideas aimed at strengthening economic growth and enhancing the wellbeing of Nigerians.
